Q

Reasons for Democrat Defeat

A
  • Change in national mood
  • War weariness, long months of diplomatic wrangling in Paris
  • Domestic political concerns
  • Some opposition came from committed isolationists, key group, ‘Irreconcilables’
  • Key personalities, e.g. Senator Lodge (Massachusetts), most prominent member of ‘Irreconcilables’
  • Lodge wasn’t an isolationist but wasn’t willing to see American power merged into an international org (LoN)
-Lodge was also Republican, clash of wills with Wilson (Democrat)
  • Wilson’s illness due to stress/paranoia, couldn’t run for a third term
