The 4 Systems Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 4 Systems?

A

Rapport, Respect, Impulsion, Flexion

We need to balance these four things. Rapport is number one; horses will run faster and jump higher out of heart and desire. Once you have rapport you gain respect, then you can achieve true impulsion because they are emotionally capable, and flexion is the final key to unlocking a horse’s top potential.

Q

The secret to Improving Rapport

A

How well you understand his/her Horsenality.
How appropriate you are in the way you approach your horse, once again considering the Horsenality and knowing what’s important to your horse.
Showing the horse how much you care before you show how much you know. Not demanding things all the time!
Doing things they like to do!

Q

The secret to Improving Respect

A

How you apply the pressure – most apply it too quickly.
When you release the pressure – most release too late.
How much pressure is appropriate for the situation – too much is unfair, too little may not be effective.
The attitude with which you apply it – make vs ask or teach

Q

The secret to Improving Impulsion

A

Impulsion is controlled forward energy, and is experienced when whoa and go are balanced or more equal… so it is as easy to compel your horse forward as it is to slow or stop him. A simple formula: Whoa = Go and Go = Whoa!
While some of that can be attributed to Horsenality (extrovert or introvert), we also have to take responsibility for our influence on them – positively or negatively. Much of that depends on our ability to control our own energy. It’s less about technique, more about self-control, leadership, communication and understanding the horse’s needs.

Q

The secret to Improving Flexion

A

Where there’s a brace in the body, there’s a brace in the mind.

If you fix the brace physically you’ll get a temporary result… but the key is to fix it mentally, to find out WHY your horse is resisting you.

Q

If one of the systems breaks down- a good thing to try is…

A

to go to the previous system to fix the problem. For example, if you are playing with flexion and your horse loses forward, play with some impulsion patterns to get forward working good again and then revisit flexion. Rapport, Respect, Impulsion and Flexion
