Why were castles built?
To protect high-profiled residents, most commonly kings and queens. It also shows power.
How would castles tire intruders?
They were built with a moat, so in case of any attacks, a bridge would rise so the invaders couldn’t get in. They were built on a hill so it was also hard for the invaders to attack as they would have to run uphill, tiring them.
Why were some castles designed so they can move?
They could go downhill. It was also easier to trip up because of the weight, especially stone castles.
What effect would castles have on locals?
They would be protected from invaders, but due to a castles construction, houses may have had to be demolished.
What type of structures did William and his army build?
They built huge, intimidating structures such as the Tower of London. This made people pay respect to William.
What advantages do stone castles have?
They are strong and firm and hard to penetrate. I you had a wooden castle, you could set fire to it.
Why did Normans build castles out of wood?
Wood was easier to get. It was lighter, quick to build and the Normans only built wooden castles for temporary use.
