The Alkali Metals Flashcards
(9 cards)
What group are the alkali metals in?
Group 1.
What is the word equation associated with the alkali metals?
metal + water -> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
What is the symbol equation associated with the alkali metals?
(metal) + H2O -> (metal)OH + H2
What are they called the alkali metals?
When they react with water, they create an alkaline solution.
How many electrons do alkali metals have in their outer shells?
They have 1 electron in their outer shells.
What happens to the reactivity as you move down the group?
The reactivity increases as you move down the group.
What are some of the main properties of the alkali metals?
- They have vigorous reactions.
- They have low melting points.
- They produce hydrogen.
- They have a low density which allows them to float.
- The effervesce when reacting with water.
What is the easiest was for any alkali metal to become stable?
To lose one electron.
Which is more reactive: Lithium or Potassium?
Potassium is more reactive because the outer shell is further away from the positive nucleus which minimises the electromagnetic forces between them. There is also more shielding of the nucleus from the other electrons in their shells.
