The Biological Approach - Evaluation Flashcards

(5 cards)

1
Q

Strength - uses scientific methods of investigation.

A
  • Investigating genetic / biological basis of behaviour - approach uses range of precise / highly scientific methods.
  • Scanning techniques (fMRI) / drug trials - accurately measures biological / neural processes in ways not open to bias.
  • Biological approach based on reliable data.

Q

Biological approach has real-life application.

A
  • Increased understanding of biochemical processes of brain lead to development of psychoactive drugs treating serious mental disorders like depression.
  • Drugs not effective for all patients but revolutionised treatment for many.
  • Strength as sufferers live normal lives.

Q

Casual conclusions about neurotransmitters difficult to establish.

A
  • Role of neurotransmitters in mental illness comes form studies showing particular drug reducing symptoms of disorders assuming the neuro-chemical in the drug causes the disorder.
  • Like assuming cause of headache is lack of paracetamol as it’s effective in relieving symptoms of headache.
  • Limitation as biological approach claims to discover causes when only associations exist.

Q

Limitation - approach based on determinist view of behaviour.

A
  • Sees human behaviour governed by internal, biological cause over which we have no control.
  • Disagrees with legal system where offenders are responsible for actions - discovery of criminal gene may complicate principle.
  • Research may have negative implications for wider society as criminals may be able to excuse their behaviour.

Q

Methodological problem is difficulty separating nature and nurture.

A
  • Identical, non-identical twins and related family members have genetic similarities, so any similarity in behaviour must be genetic from a biological perspective.
  • The fact family members are exposed to similar environmental conditions is a confounding variable.
  • Problem for approach as findings could be interpreted as supporting nurture rather than nature.
