the bohr effect Flashcards
(9 cards)
When does the Bohr effect normally occur?
During exercise
Where does the Bohr effect not occur?
In the lungs
What happens to the CO2 concentration during exercise?
It increases
What is the Bohr effect due to?
Decrease in pH when the CO2 dissolves in the blood to form acid
What does the change in pH do to the haemoglobin?
Changes the quaternary structure and lowers the affinity
Which way does the dissociation curve move to?
Right
Is more or less oxygen released to respiring tissues?
More oxygen
Why is the Bohr effect an advantage to the body?
It ensures that haemoglobin releases more oxygen to the most active cells for the increase in respiration taking place
What happens to the dissociation curve when temperature increases?
It shifts to the right
