Q

Cerebrospinal fluid

A

Made from water in bloodstream circulates in subarachnoid space and is replaced 4 times aday. Acts as a shock absorber and cushion circulates hormones nutrients white blood cells, etc. Across blood brain barrier

Q

Blood brain barrier

A

Separation b/w blood and CNS o capillaries have tight junctions - each capillary cell’s tightly fused to one beside it so substances can’t move b/w cells. Most transport through specific protein carriers o however, lipid soluble molecules can diffuse through the membraneI for example - caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, eat.

Q

Cerebral cortex

A

Outer sheet of neurons on surface of cerebrum made of grey matter that has deep fissures (folds to increase SA ) coordinating center for sensory info and voluntary motor actions ↑ folds = ↑ function

A

Receives and analyzes visual info

17
Q

temporal lobes

A

bottom. auditory reception, visual and verbal memories, understanding speech, smell

18
Q

parietal lobes

A

upper. receives and processes sensory info from the skin (somatosensory cortex) spatial awareness, taste

19
Q

frontal lobes

A

conscious thought, intelligence, memory, personality, precise voluntary motor mvmt

20
Q

homonculus

A

representation of what body part wld look like if number of neurons associated matched the size of body part

21
Q

broca’s area

A

speaking ability (LH)

22
Q

wernick’s area

A

language comprehension area (LH) could speak but it’s gibberish

23
Q

corpus callosum

A

connects RH n LH. thick band of axons.

24
Q

thalamus

A

major integrating centre of brain. sorts and directs incoming sensory info
