the brain Flashcards

Q

name the four parts of the brain it can be split into

A

the cerebrum

Q

what is the cerebral cortex?

A

largest region of the cerebrum and plays a key role in memory, attention, perception, cognition, awareness, thought, language, and consciousness

Q

what is the cerebrum?

A

largest part of the brain
divided into two halves called hemispheres
where frontal lobes are found, that coordinate high-level behaviours (motor skills, problem solving, judgement, planning, attention) as well as emotion and impulse control

Q

what is the cerebellum?

A

‘little brain’
brain stem located here
it is the back of the brain, below the occipital lobes
responsible for fine motor skills and smaller/finer movements such as that of the hands and feet
helps body posture, equilibrium and balance

Q

what is the diencephalon responsible for?

A

the thalamus is the relay station for signals coming into the brain
It is associated with consciousness, sleep and memory
the epithalamus is a connection between limbic system and other brain parts. The limbic system is involved with emotion, long-term memory and behaviour
the hypothalamus maintains homeostasis. It controls appetite, body temperature regulation, sleep-wake cycle, production and releasing of hormone control

Q

What is the brain stem responsible for?

A

It is located in the cerebellum
midbrain controls eye movement and processes visual and auditory information
pons is the largest part of the brain stem and a group of nerves that connect brain parts
it also contains cranial nerves, responsible for facial movements
medulla oblongata- lowest part of the brain, acting as a control centre for heart and lung function. It regulates breathing, sneezing and swallowing
