The Brain Flashcards
(16 cards)
Cerebellum
- Responsible for balance, fine motor coordination and eye movement
- Receives sensory impulses from inner ear (vestibular apparatus) and motor impulse from motor cortex
Medulla oblongata
•Responsible for basic life functions such as the breathing rate, heart rate, blood pressure etc.
Pons (the bridge)
•It relays information between the cerebellum and the cerebrum
Thalamus
Major relay centre for sensory information from body, eyes, ears, etc. Except olfaction
Hypothalamus
- Controls the pituitary
* Initiate activity of the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic)
Pituitary
• Controls many other glands in the body
Ventricles
• circulate CSF throughout the brain and spinal cord
Corpus callosum
- Is Myelinated
* connects the left and right cerebral hemispheres and it allows communication between the two hemispheres
Cerebrum
• Is the largest part of the brain
Frontal lobe
•motor areas (often referred to as the motor cortex) control movement of voluntary muscles, basic intelligence, memory, and personality
Parietal Lobe
•skin sensory info (touch, taste and temperature) and body position
Temporal lobe
•responsible for hearing
Occipital lobe
•vision
CSF
• acts as a shock absorber, transportation medium (carries nutrients to the brain and eliminates waste) and cushions the brain
Broca’s area
•Coordinates the muscles for speaking and translates thoughts into speech
Wernicke’s area
•Language comprehension
