The Cell Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is the mitochondrion?
The power plant of the cell. They provide energy to the cell.
What is the chloroplast?
Food factories of the plant cell.
What is are ribosomes?
Protein manufacturers. They produce proteins for the cells growth, repair, and reproduction.
What is the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Carry materials through the cytoplasm. It is “rough” because of the ribosomes attached to it.
What is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
Carry materials through the cytoplasm. It is “smooth” because there is no ribosomes attached to it.
What is the Golgi apparatus?
The protein storage.
What is the nucleus?
The cells control centre.
What is the cell wall?
Supports and protects the plant cell.
What is the cell membrane?
Holds the contents of the cell in place.
What is the vacuole?
Each vacuole is filled with fluid and is used to store nutrients, such as sugar and minerals.
What are lysosomes?
Formed by the Golgi apparatus to patrol and clean the cytoplasm.
What are chromosomes?
Chromosomes are found inside the nucleus. It contains DNA and other genetic information.
What is the central vacuole?
Filled with water and nutrients. But, it takes much more space in the cytoplasm in the plant cell.
What is the cytoplasm?
A watery fluid that contains everything in the cell membrane and outside the nucleus.
Only existing cells can give life to ___ cells.
New.
This is the process that goes on in the chloroplasts of cells which produces sugars (food) for the cell.
Photosynthesis.
The diffusion of water through a membrane from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.
Osmosis.
Which organelles provide energy for the cell?
Mitochondria.
All living things require ______.
Energy.
Short hair-like structures which aid in cell locomotion.
Cilia.
What are specialized vacuoles which contain digestive enzymes use to break down unwanted materials within the cell.
Lysosomes.
