The Cell Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is a Cell?
A cell is the smallest working unit of a living organism.
What is unicellular and give an example.
A Organism that is made up of just one cell
An example would be bacteria.
What is multicellular and give an example.
An organism that is made up of thousands, millions and even trillions of cells.
For example humans.
What are the 7 characteristics of living things?
Reproduction, Movement, Respiration, Response, Nutrition, Growth and Excretion
What is Reproduction
Making (producing) new living things
What is Movement
Changing position
What is Respiration
Releasing energy from food.
What is Response
Reacting to the environment
What is Nutrition
Requiring Food, Water and other Nutrients
What is Growth
Increasing in number or size of cells.
What is Excretion
Getting rid of waste matter.
What are cell structures
The individual parts of a cell are known as cell structures.
What are the different types of Cell Structures in an Animal Cell?
Ribosome, Cell Membrane, Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Mitochondria.
What is the function of the Ribosome
To make Proteins e.g. enzymes and hormones
What is the function of the Cell Membrane?
- Protects the cell
-Allows substances to get in or out of the cell
What is the function of the Nucleus?
-Carries genes
-Controls the activities of the cell “The Brain”
What is the function of the Cytoplasm?
It is a watery fluid of salts and food in which cells float.
What is the function of the Mitochondria
It releases energy from food in respiration.
What are the parts of the plant cell that is unique from the animal cell?
The cell wall, the vacuole, and the chloroplast
What is the function of a Cell Wall?
It provides extra protection for the cell
What is the function of the vacuole?
It is where food and water is stored
What is Chloroplast?
Carries chlorophyll which makes food in photosynthesis.
