Q

What are the roles of mitosis?

A
  • Growth
  • Repair (replacing dead tissue)
  • Reproduction (some single-celled organisms like reproduce via mitosis)

Q

What happens during Prophase?

A
  • Chromosomes in the cell start to become visible
  • Centrioles move to opposite poles of the cell
  • Centrioles start producing spindle fibre that extends across the cell
  • The nuclear envelope disintegrates, freeing the chromosomes

Q

What happens during Metaphase?

A
  • Spindle fibres attach to the chromosomes by the centromeres
  • Chromosomes are lined up at the equator of the cell

Q

What happens during Anaphase?

A
  • Chromosomes are pulled apart from the centromere, splitting them into individual sister chromatids
  • Spindle fibres pull chromatids to opposite poles of the cell

Q

What happens during Telophase?

A
  • Chromatids reach opposite poles of the cell
  • A nuclear envelope reforms around the chromosomes. Cell now has two nuclei
  • Cell prepares to split its cytoplasm
