The Cell Cycle Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Q
What are the stages of mitosis?
A
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
2
Q
What are the roles of mitosis?
A
- Growth
- Repair (replacing dead tissue)
- Reproduction (some single-celled organisms like reproduce via mitosis)
3
Q
What happens during Prophase?
A
- Chromosomes in the cell start to become visible
- Centrioles move to opposite poles of the cell
- Centrioles start producing spindle fibre that extends across the cell
- The nuclear envelope disintegrates, freeing the chromosomes
4
Q
What happens during Metaphase?
A
- Spindle fibres attach to the chromosomes by the centromeres
- Chromosomes are lined up at the equator of the cell
5
Q
What happens during Anaphase?
A
- Chromosomes are pulled apart from the centromere, splitting them into individual sister chromatids
- Spindle fibres pull chromatids to opposite poles of the cell
6
Q
What happens during Telophase?
A
- Chromatids reach opposite poles of the cell
- A nuclear envelope reforms around the chromosomes. Cell now has two nuclei
- Cell prepares to split its cytoplasm
7
Q
What happens during cytokinesis?
A
- Cell cytoplasm splits, leaving two genetically identical daughter cells
