The Circulatory System Flashcards
(20 cards)
Blood
carries oxygen to cells, carries waste away from cells. Composed of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma
Blood Vessels / vaso sanguíneos
assist in the transportation of blood within the body, often in and out of the heart. Three types: capillaries, arteries, veins
Plasma / plasma - parte liquido del sangre
the bloods liquid component, carries the blood cells suspended within it, serves as a transport system delivering various materials to and from cells.
Hemoglobin / Hemoglobina, la materia colorante de la sangre
carries oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues and takes carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs
White blood cells / Glóbulos blancos / leucocitos
fight infection; also known as leukocytes; hunt down and destroy bacteria, viruses and other contaminants that the body senses; created in the bone marrow
Platelets / la plaqueta
1). Transport of enzymes and proteins critical to clotting. 2). Formation of a platelet plug to slow blood loss. 3). Contraction after it’s formed, which reduces the size of the vessel break
Red blood cells / Glóbulos rojos
contain hemoglobin and iron which make them red; carry out gas exchange in the body, carry oxygen from the lungs to the tissues around body
Arteries / Arteria, canal destinado a recibir la sangre del corazón y distribuirla por todo el cuerpo
carry oxygenated blood away from the heart, to the rest of the body
Veins / vena
carry deoxygenated blood from the capillaries and the rest the body to the heart
Capillaries / Vaso capilar
exchange water and chemicals between blood and tissues, connect arteries to veins
Aorta / Aorta, la arteria mayor del cuerpo
carry oxygenated blood to the rest of the body; the major artery carry blood away from the heart
Pulmonary artery / Arteria pulmonar
transports deoxygenated blood from the heart to the left and right lungs
Pulmonary vein / Vena pulmonar
transports oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart
Septum / Septo, la cosa que se divide o separa a otras entre sí
the dividing wall of the heart, separates the left and right ventricles, stops blood from crossing from one side of the heart to the other
Myocardium / miocardio
thick middle layer of the heart that forms the bulk of the heart wall and contracts as the organ beats
Pericardium / pericardio
keeps heart contained in the chest cavity, prevents the heart from over expanding when blood volume increases
Ventricles / Ventrículo: se da este nombre a dos cavidades del corazón y a cuatro del cerebro
pump blood to the entire body. Right ventricle receives blood from the right atrium and pumps it to the pulmonary artery (lungs). Left ventricle receives blood from the left atrium and pumps to the aorta (to the rest of the body)
Atrium / atrio
the filling chambers for all aspects of the circulatory system. Right atrium receives blood from body and transports to right ventricle. Left receives blood from lungs and transports it to left ventricle
Antigens / antigeno
the substance that binds specifically to the respective antibody
Antibodies / anticuerpo
a protein the body produces which binds to the surface of the foreign body like a bacteria or virus and prevents it from actively damaging your body
