Secession

A

December 1860 southern delegates meet to decide the future of the south
South Carolina secedes
January 1861 Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas follow
February 1861 7 states send delegates to Montgomery Alabama and the Confederate States of America is formed
Form new constitution and congress based on the existing with a few changes
-Slavery is legal
-States have more power
Jefferson Davis nominated as President of the Confederacy
Begin seizing government institutions
Military bases are the toughest because they aren’t run by southerners

Fort Sumter

A

Charleston SC
Buchanan sends resupply ships but confederates fire on the ship and it returns to New York
Lincoln’s inauguration speech states he supports the south but that government institutions will remain under Union control
April 12, 1861 Confederacy begins bombarding Fort Sumter and by the 14th Union forces surrender and are released

Mobilization

A

Lincoln sends a letter to each governor requesting troops to “Hold the nation together”
Some states agree but more secede
-Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia
Confederacy moves capitol from Montgomery to Richmond Virgina
Many Virginians in the west support the north and secede from Virginia
-Becomes West Virginia

Cotton Diplomacy

  • If foreign countries can’t get cotton they will side with the Confederacy
  • Fails due to economic situations and they start growing their own cotton

War & Slavery

A

Congress passes Confiscation Act
-As northern armies move through the south if slaves are actively helping south they can be freed
-2nd act passed that states if slaves can be proved to be owned by Confederates they can be freed too
Lincoln passes the Emancipation Proclamation
-All slaves in confederate states are free
-Strikes at slavery without affecting the border states
-Brings northern abolitionists onto his side
-Keeps England out of the war
Lincoln sets up a blockade around the southern coastlines

A

Superior forces and industry eventually overtakes the south
1864 last chance for south to win the war
-Lincoln is not popular because of the war
-Northern democrats open to negotiations with Confederate states and nominate General McClellan
-Lincoln gains support and wins handily
Robert E. Lee surrenders at Appomattox court house in April 9, 1865
Lincoln assassinated on April 14, 1865 in Ford theater by John Wilkes Booth
-First president assassinated
