What was SALT 1?

A
  • President Nixon wanted to improve relations with the Soviet Union and talks led to an agreement in 1972. SALT was an Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and ABM systems at only two sites with 100 missiles each.
  • Imposed limits on the nuclear capability of Russia and the USA.
  • The USA and the USSR agreed that there would be no further production of strategic ballistic missiles.
  • Both powers agreed that submarines carrying nuclear weapons would only be introduced when existing stocks of intercontinental ballistic missiles became obsolete.
  • The USA and the Soviet Union (expect superpowers) agreed that submarines carrying nuclear weapons would only be introduced when existing stocks of ICBMs became obsolete.
