What is chronic bronchitis/bronchiectasis/chronic tracheobronchial syndrome?

A

Syndrome characterised by chronic irritation to bronchial mucosa this results in increased mucous secretion, compromised defence mechanisms, coughing anf bronchial constriction

How would you describe the cough in chronic bronchitis?

A

Dry and hacking

What effect can chronic bronchitis have on the heart?

A

It can cause sinus arrhythmia

What’s the best way to diagnose chronic bronchitis?

A

endoscopy to visualise the inflammation and rule out other causes of infection. This can be combined with a tracheobronchial wash to reveal a mixed population of inflammatory and epithelial cells.

What management recommendations would you suggest for Chronic bronchitis ?

A

Clean atmosphere, humidification of home, Limited but regular exercise, and replacing collar with haltie

What drug therapy would you use for dogs suffering with chronic bronchitis ?

A

Bronchodilators, Antibiotics (if indicated), Expectorants, Mucolyics, Cough Suppressants ( ONLY IF NON PRODUCTIVE) and anti inflammatory medication.

Corticosteroids are indicated for treatment of chronic bronchitis but what must you be careful of?

A

Iatrogenic cushings

What is the pathophysiology of tracheal collapse?

A

Abnormal flexability or the tracheal rings and stretching of the dorsal ligaments resulting is collapse

What breeds of dog are typically affected by tracheal collapse?

A

Yorkshire terriers and miniture poodles but also other small breeds

What clinical signs are associated with tracheal collapse?

A

Possibly audible clicking or slapping noises on inspiration or expiration. Mostly chronic cough and dynpnoea

A

Xray or ideally endoscopy

A

Pulmonary vasculature that can result in pulmonary hypertension and possible haemorrhage
