The Digestion system Flashcards
(34 cards)
What are proteins?
Proteins build and repair body cells.
What are complete proteins?
Complete proteins contain all amino acids.
What are incomplete proteins?
Incomplete proteins do not contain all the essential amino acids.
What are carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates provide energy.
What are simple carbohydrates?
Simple carbohydrates are sugars such as fruits.
What are complex carbohydrates?
Complex carbohydrates are starches such as pasta, breads, rice, and potatoes.
What are fats?
Fats, also known as lipids, provide some energy and cushion organs.
What are saturated fats?
Saturated fats are unhealthy fats from animals, such as butter (solids).
What are unsaturated fats?
Unsaturated fats are good fats from plants, such as oils (liquids).
What are vitamins?
Vitamins are needed in small (micro) amounts.
What are water-soluble vitamins?
Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water, such as Vitamins B and C.
What are fat-soluble vitamins?
Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in fat, such as Vitamins A, D, E, and K.
What are minerals?
Minerals are essential nutrients.
What are organic minerals?
Organic minerals contain the element carbon.
What are inorganic minerals?
Inorganic minerals do not contain the element carbon.
What is the role of water in the body?
Water makes up 60-70% of your body.
How long can the body exist without food compared to water?
The body can exist without food much longer than it can without water.
What are the 6 groups of nutrition
- Water
- Vitemins
- Minerals
- Carbohydrates
- Fats/lipids
- Proteins
What are the functions of the digestive system?
- ingestion
- Digestion
- Absorbtion
- Elimination
What are nutrients?
Substances in food (proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water) that provide energy and materials for cell development, growth, and repair.
What is digestion?
The process that breaks down food into small molecules so that they can be absorbed and moved into the blood.
What is mechanical digestion?
Occurs when food is chewed, mixed, and churned (like a machine).
What is chemical digestion?
Occurs when chemical reactions break down large molecules of food into smaller ones.
What is an enzyme?
A type of protein that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction to begin.
