The divisions of the nervous system Flashcards
central and peripheal (somatic and autonomic (10 cards)
1
Q
components of central nervous system
A
Spinal Cord and Brain
2
Q
components of peripheral nervous system
A
Autonomic and Somatic nervous system
3
Q
Components of the autonomic nervous
A
Parasympathetic and Sympathetic
4
Q
function of the brain
A
- The center of all conscious awareness
- The brain collects all the information provided by other areas of the nervous system and makes decisions to control behavior and bodily functions.
- It coordinates responses by sending signals to muscles and glands to maintain bodily regulation
5
Q
function of the spinal cord
A
- An extension of the brain
- Responsible for our reflex actions
- relays information between the brain and the peripheral nervous system, enabling coordination of sensory input and motor output
6
Q
peripheral nervous system
A
- makes up all the nerve cells outside of the brain and spinal cord
- relays nerve impulses from the CNS to the rest of the body and from the body back to the CNS
- enables coordination between internal and external environments
7
Q
somatic nervous system
A
- Part of the peripheral nervous system that controls voluntary movements of skeletal muscles.
- Contains sensory neurons that carry information from sensory receptors to the CNS.
- Contains motor neurons that transmit signals from the CNS to muscles.
- Involved in conscious, voluntary actions
8
Q
autonomic nervous system
A
- governs vital involuntary functions in the body (e.g., heart rate, digestion).
- Controls organs and glands to maintain bodily functions automatically.
- Its control center is located in the brain stem.
- Operates without conscious control, regulating processes essential for survival
9
Q
sympathetic nervous system
A
- Activated automatically when the body is exposed to stressors or threats.
- The hypothalamus sends signals to the sympathetic nervous system (SNS).
- SNS stimulates the adrenal glands to release adrenaline (epinephrine).
- Prepares the body for ‘fight or flight’ by increasing heart rate, dilating pupils, and redirecting blood flow to muscles.
10
Q
parasympathetic nervous system
A
- Activated after the threat has passed to calm the body down.
- Works to conserve and restore energy by slowing the heart rate and lowering blood pressure.
- Promotes ‘rest and digest’ functions such as digestion and gland activity.
- Balances the effects of the sympathetic nervous system to maintain homeostasis
