What happened in 1916
1k armed rebels, seized the general post office and placed signed proclamation announcing the creation of Irish republic
What did the rebels hope would happen
They hoped German invasion and national uprising but it didn’t happen
What resulted from the seize of the general post office
It failed, Post office bombarded and within 1 week the rebels were hunted down.
How was the uprising a fail
Only 1.6k rebels which received no support outside Dublin, rebellion was condemned by redmond
Why did Irish attitudes begin to change
As a result of British actions,
- the 7 who signed the proclamation were shot
- 3000 arrest and imprisoned in England
- Harsh treatment to those in jail
How did DLG act to uprising
Offered Home rule to 26 counties in Southern Ireland, and that Ulster would remain part of the UK. DLG give the impression that this was permanent to Edward Carson and temporary to John redmond.
Rejected by Unionists who believed DLG was trying to make nationalists happy

Growth in support as peaceful solution failed, 1917 250k members. Proclaimed Irish an independent republic. Irish volunteer force become the IRA
