The effects of globalization on climate change Flashcards
(12 cards)
Globalization
Globalization: The reorganization of the world’s economy in a transnational way so that people, products, ideas, and investments can move freely across borders.
Climate Change
Climate Change: A long-term change in the average weather patterns that have come to define Earth’s climates.
Anthropogenic Climate Change:
Climate change that is…
Anthropogenic Climate Change: Climate change that is caused by human activities, primarily through the emission of greenhouse gases. Also referred to as human-caused climate change or global warming.
Global Warming
Global Warming: The long-term heating of Earth’s climate system observed since the pre-industrial period (between 1850 and 1900) due to human activities, mainly fossil fuel burning, which increases heat-trapping ghg levels in Earth’s atmosphere.
Greenhouse Gases (GHGs)
Greenhouse Gases (GHGs): Gases in the Earth’s atmosphere that trap heat. Examples include carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor. An increase in these gases leads to a warming of the planet.
Industrial Revolution
Industrial Revolution: A period of major technological advancement that began in Great Britain in the late 1700s and spread to other parts of the world, characterized by new energy sources (like coal and oil) and large-scale factory production.
Global Middle Class (GMC)
Global Middle Class (GMC): Individuals who have moved out of poverty and have a certain level of disposable income, often leading to changes in consumption patterns.
Fossil Fuels
Fossil Fuels: Combustible deposits of organic materials, formed from decayed plants and animals that have been converted to oil, coal, or gas, by exposure to heat and pressure in the Earth’s crust over hundreds of millions of years. Their burning releases greenhouse gases.
Carbon Footprint
Carbon Footprint: The total amount of greenhouse gases that are generated by our actions, either as individuals, organizations, events, or products.
It is usually expressed as a carbon dioxide equivalent.
Transnational
Transnational: Extending or operating across national boundaries.
What is global warming?
- Global temperatures has increased since the Industrial Revolution (1800 —>).
- This rise in temperatures can be caused by the large scale burning of fossil fuels which produces GHGs.
- GHGs cause a greenhouse effect, trapping heat in the atmosphere. Thus an increase in GHGs is causing an increase in temperatures
How does globalization cause global warming?
1. Food
2. Transported
3. Travel
4. Products
5. Teenagers
Globalization resulted in a reduction in poverty in the world. As people move from living in poverty into the wealthier global middle class (GMC), they change their lifestyles in the following ways:
1) Food - Most people no longer eat traditional food but instead buy processed food such as food from fast food restaurants and also food containing more meat. Processing food and meat produces larger quantities of GHGs.
2) People buy products that are transported over long distances in ships, planes, trains, trucks etc. Most of these use fossil fuels that produces GHGs.
3)People are rich enough to travel around the world. Planes use fossil fuels = GHGs
4) People buy products such as washing machines/air conditioning/Tvs. These are powered by electricity. Most of the world’s electricity is produced by burning coal.
5)Teenagers stare at their laptops, phones etc. These products are made in places like China where most electricity is generated by burning coal.
