A

Many want to let go of phillipines because it’s causing tax payer money to go to waaste. Tydings Mc. Duffy Act sets up independence of the phillipines, doesn’t take place until 1946 because of the war, but they still keep hold of their army bases

A

7th pan american conference. There is less interest in being imperialistic, and others want ot protect their financial itnerests. Us endorses non-intervention as a policy, not going t o intervene but will be there to sonsult. FDR is trying to build up friendly relations in Latin America

A

Secretary of state, Hull, believes restricted rtrade will lead to war. They pass the Reciprocal trade agreement in 1934, giving president power to reduce the tariff to 50% if the other country did the same. = Exports increase and creates friendlier relations

A

Memories of WWI cause isolationism. Europe hadn’t paid their loans and didn’t see the benefits of getting involved in other wars. Gives rise to dictators like Hitler and Mussolini.

Neutrality acts 1935-1937

A

Trying not to make the same mistakes that got US into WWI. They make it illegal to sail on belligerent ships if they’re involved in war. Illegal to make loans to fighting countries. Illegal to sell munitions. This only makes it easier for other countries to take advantage of Europe. They do Cash=and-carry basis, meaning they have to pick it up on their own ships so US doesn’t get hurt.

Lack of US military Preparedness

A

It’s too costly to try to build up the military, we should be focused on our economy. Congress then allocates 1 bilion dollars to build up the miltary in 1937. FDR gives the “Quarantine Speech” proposing to help the peaceful countries.

Japanese Aggression

A

Japan wants more land. Japan Denounces Washington Naval Treaty about the 5-5-3 ratio. Japanese attack china, and end up sinking the US Panay ship. US Doesn’t retaliate because they don’t want to get involved

American Isolationism- German Aggression

A

Breaks the Treaty of Versailles, by building up their naval resources. Policy of appeasement so they don’t cause more German aggression. Hitler takes over Austria. At the Munich Conference in 1938, England and France agree to let Hitler have Sudentenland, primsing not to take anymore land. He agrees. He occupies Sudentenland, then the rest of Czech in 1939.

American Isolationism- German-USSR allyship

A

Hitler wants to eventually take Russia, but he doesn’t want a double front situation. He wants to fight Britain and France first, then attack Russia. They make an agreement that if Hitler takes Poland, that Russia won’t attack them. Stalin wants to buy time until he can build up his army.

Response to France and GB going to war

A

pass the Neutrality act of 1939. Hitler releases the Blitzkrieg, taking over France in weeks. Hitler makes a mistake by not moving his tanks in on the British troops stuck at Dunkirk. This is a fatal mistake in the war. Us gears up itself to go to war. Congress provides 37 billiion dollars, making a peacetime draft to prepare for potential war.

Neither side want to fight. The committee to Defend American by aiding hte allies think that britain is fighting for freedom. If britain falls, then they’ll attack the US. America First Committee say not to go over there and stay out.American Isolationism Weakens

A

Sells 50 old destroyers in return for British bases around the world. He didn’t ask congress and becomes heavily criticized. Most people are okay with this move and keeping us out of war.

A

German U-boats attack several US SHips when shipping US arms to Iceland for GB. Congress reverses the Neutrality act, saying that US merchant shps can be armed and can sail into combat zones
