The evolutionary explanations for partner preferance, including the relationship between sexual selection and human reproductive behaviour Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is sexual selection?
-it explains partner reference
-based on maximizing reproductive success
What is human reproductive behavior based on?
Anisogamy
What is anisogamy?
-Male gametes, made in vast numbers where there continuously produced all throughout life
-Female gametes, produced every month for a limited amount of fertile years
What is the order of human reproductive behavior?
1 demands
2 HRB
3 inter sexual selection
What are the male demands?
Remain fertile there whole life so aren’t sure of maternity
What is male reproductive behavior?
Men become more promiscuious and have short term with multiple females
What is the males inter-sexual selection?
ensure child has greater survival chance they seek young attractive wide hip women
What are the demands of the female?
fertile for 30 years so are sure about maternity.
What are the female reproductive behavior?
Engage in long term mating and are more choosey
What is the female inter sexual selection?
seek strong dominant tall men who provide resources
What is intra sexual selection for males?
Compete for high quality females by having physical aggression with other men
What is intra sexual selection for females?
compete for high quality male
What are the 3 evaluations?
-RTS, BUSS
-RTS, CLARKE and HATFEILD
-lacks temporal validity
Explain RTS conducted by BUSS.
-carried out a survey on 1000 participants from 33 countries
-asks about various attributes that the evolutionary theory predicts
-men prefer youthful physically attractive females
-women prefer financial stable ambitious men
-supports as it shows universal sex differences
Explain RTS by Clarke and Hatfeild.
-males and females approached opposite sex and asked question
-‘will you have sex with me’
-75% of men said yes 0%
-supports partner preference as it shows how women are choosey and how men have developed different strategy
Explain lacks temporal validity.
-cannot explain modern relationships
-doesn’t explain homo,no kids, abortions
-all relationships are motivated by the desire to reproduce
-limit
