Family demography
Family demography is the study of what families are made of and how people join or leave different kinds of families.
Divorce and separation
Two of the main reasons for broken homes are Parents argue or fight a lot and Parents separate or get divorced.
Both children and parents are unable to fully enjoy the benefits to be gained from having a close bond. This can be stressful.
Single parent households
The things that both parents used to do are now reduced or discontinued over time.
Parents are now involved in establishing separate places of residency with visiting children.
Visits are now scheduled times administered by court or agreed on both parents
Emergence of non traditional family forms
This includes blended and sibling family forms.
Both children and parents go through a period of adjustment of varying lengths before accepting their new family.
Delays in marriages
Many adult children now depend more on their elderly parents.
This is different from before, when older parents usually depended on their adult children
Rate of reproduction
The drop in birth rates happens for many reasons.
Technology helps couples plan when to have children.
Because of this, many wait longer to have their first child, have fewer children, or choose to have no children at all.
Rate of mortality
Better medicine and food help people live longer, so there are more older people.
Many elderly need care from the government or their children.
Because families are smaller, many adults care for both their kids and their aging parents. This is called the “Sandwich Generation.”
Migration
People move to cities or other countries for better jobs.
This causes changes in families, like separation, divorce, and more adoptive or foster families.
Older people are often left in state care because their children move away.
With less space at home, schools, churches, and communities help raise children.
Family connections between generations get weaker, so many people handle life alone.
