the first law of motion Flashcards
(15 cards)
what is the first law of motion?
an object at rest remains at rest and an object in motion remains at motion, unless acted upon by an unbalanced external force
what is inertia?
inertia is the natural tendency of an object to remain it’s velocity
what is velocity?
velocity is the speed and direction an object is moving in
what does inertia do to an object at rest?
if an object is at rest, it tends to stay at rest
what does inertia do to a moving object?
if an object is moving, it tends to keep moving in the same direction, with the same speed
explain why inertia is NOT a force
inertia is not a force, because it does not act on an object. it is just a property that all things with mass have
what is newton’s first law of motion?
an object will keep moving with the same speed and direction unless acted on by a force
what is net force?
net force is the sum of forces acting on a single object
how do you find the net force?
- add any forces acting in the same direction
- subtract any forces acting in the opposite direction
when do the forces cancel each other out?
the forces cancel when they have the same strength, and opposite direction
what is a balanced force?
when the net force is zero
when do the forces not cancel each other out?
when the forces are different strengths or act in the same direction
what is an unbalanced force?
when the net force is not zero
what happens to an object with zero net force?
an object with zero net force either remains at rest or keeps moving with the same velocity, the acceleration is zero
what happens to an object with a net force acting on it?
an object with a net force acting on it accelerates in the direction of the net force
