Principle 1 of what an RP must have/do?
1) Secure the safe and effective running of the pharmacy
- if not safe take steps
- if unsure ask for help,owner/manager
- If not possible may need to close
- need to be comfortable that the Pharmacy is safe
Principle 2 of an RP
- Display RP notice - must be clear and visible
- if RP absent but responsible then don’t change notice - Name,GPHC NO. And statement to say that your are the responsible pharmacist in that pharmacy at that point in time
Principle 3 of RP
3) Complete the pharmacy record register
- Pharmacy record must be accurate
- only pharmacist to enter
-if alterations need to be made - need to identify who made alterations
-do not cross out
-back up necessary if GPHC inspector requires record
What do we fill into the RP register?
Written/electronic:
-RP Name and GPHC number
Date and Time they became RP
- Date and time they stopped their role of RP - If absent - Date,time pharmacist left and retuned
- keep for 5 years
LUNCHTIME?
- Depends on pharmacy
- leaving premises for lunch, sign out
Principle 4 - Rp
Establish,maintain and review pharmacy procedure
Cover following:
- arrangements to secure medicinal products ie.ordering meds
- non pharmacist colleagues member giving advice:
Eg,when non pharmacist colleagues( counsel assistants or dispensers) can give advice
- who are the staff- their roles and responsibilities
We need to have procedures in place
- what to do if there’s no pharmacist - what’s the protocol
- what if there’s a change in RP
- Complaint procedures and what to do about it
- How to notify staff
- Keep pharmacy procedure
- writing/electronic record
- have adequate back up copies
- be available for inspections and review regularly once every 2 years or following an incident
RP absence can be for how long?
- 2 hours during the pharmacy business hours
Arrangements - absent only if the pharmacy can continue to run safely and effectively
When you are absent you need to do what?
- remain contactable arrange cover if unable to
- pharmacist - be in charge as rp
- one rp at any point
Absence from midnight to midnight
Can’t be for more than 2 hours even if you switch pharmacist from morning to night shift (its shared_
Responsible pharmacist to be in charge and physically present
— professional check
—sale and supply of pharmacy meds
- sale and supply of poms
- sale and supply of medicines under PGD
- wholesale of meds
- emergency supply at request of patient and prescriber
Responsible pharmacist in charge and may not need to be physically present during what?
- assembled process
-generating a dispensing label - taking medicines off dispensary shelves
-assembled of the items
-labelling of containers with the dispensing labels - accuracy checking
Activities which can take place with RP in charge but does not need supervision
-Sale of gsl meds
-processing waste stock or patient returns(doesn’t apply if its a CD)
Activities that can take place without an RP in charge but does require staff to be trained appropriately
- ordering stock from supplies
- receiving and putting stock away - excluding CDs
- date checking
-responding to queries
-cleaning
-accessing PMR - Receiving prescriptions via EPS
