The Genetic Explanation Flashcards
(5 cards)
Name one family study and it’s findings.
Kendler et al (1985), found 18x greater risk of schizophrenia if 1* relative was schizophrenic.
Name one adoption study and it’s findings.
Tienari et al (1987), 112 adopted children who had biological mother with schizophrenia, 135 adopted without.
7% of children developed schizophrenia compared to 1.5% in control group.
Name one twin study and the findings.
Torey (1992), in systematic review, found 26% concordance rate in MZ, and 6% in DZ.
Give two strengths of the genetic explanation.
The results of Kendler et al (1985).
Reductionist, so can establish a clear link/relationship.
Give 2 weaknesses of the genetic explanation.
Torey’s study shows that explanation lacks validity as MZ twins share 100% DNA but only have concordance rate of 26%.
Genetics can only establish links to schizophrenia. No clear cause and effect.
