Who were the Herbertists ?
Athiest group led by Jacques Herbert
Why were the Herbertists purged by the CPS ?
Herbert encouraged insurrection, through his newspaper, he also encouraged unrest and supported de-christianisation. CPS could not accept such a challenge to its authority.
Jury gave a guilty verdict and on 24 March, the Herbertists were sent to the guillotine.
Explain the Widespread vandalism in relation to the religious terror (de-Christianisation)
Encourged by the Herbertists, and actions through the sans-culottes, Altarpieces were smashed, satined-glass windows broken, prayer books and crucifixes were burnt. Priests were attacked and forced to renounce their priesthood, some were even forced into marriage.
What was the Law of 22 Prarial ? (10 June 1794) “Law of the great Terror”
Deemed that a defense hearing was no longer necessary during a trial. Juries were given the power to pass verdict, based on their own moral judgement of defendants actions and character.
This led to increasing deaths through the revolutionary tribunal.
What were Robespierred and Saint Just views on the Terror ?
Robespierre belived the Terror had to continue to reach a utopian society, he defended it.
Saint just also defendded the Terror, claiming those who were true to France had nothing to fear.
