What were the 5 main reasons the first world war started(think MANIA)?
Militarism, Alliances, Nationalism, Imperialism and Assassination.
What is militarism?
The belief a country should maintain a strong military.
What is the arms race?
When countries built dozens of battleships and weapons.
What did the British build in 1906?
Dreadnought.
Who was ready for war in 1914?
Britain and Germany.
Which 3 countries were in the Triple Entente?
Britain, France and Russia.
Which 3 countries were in the Triple alliance?
Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy.
What are the problems of an alliance system?
Countries might not want to got to war.
What is nationalism?
Nationalism is having passion for your country.
When is nationalism usually strong?
Before and during large affairs.
What country did Austria take over in 1908?
Bosnia.
What did the serbs living in Bosnia want?
They wanted to be part of Serbia, not Austria.
What is Imperialism?
The desire to have an empire
Who had the best navy at this moment and why is this important?
Britain and they would get the best territories.
Who is Kaiser Whilhem?
Germany’s leader.
What did Kaiser Whilhem promise?
To have a vast empire.
By 1914 how much land did Britain own and why is this important?
One third of the land in the world and it made a lot of tension between Britain and Germany.
Who was Franz Ferdinand? Who killed him and why?
Gavrilo Princip killed the Austrian prince Franz Ferdinand because he was fed up of no longer bering a part of Serbia.
Why did teens join the army?
The Pal’s Battalion- it seemed that they would be treated like heroes and make friends, propaganda and peer pressure.
What were the properties of the trenches?
Sandbags, barbed wire, no-mans land, ammunition shelf, forested, duckboards, drainage ditch, dugout and the parapet.
What was no mans land?
The area in-between the two sets of front line trenches- not claimed by either side yet.
What was the barbed wire there for?
Sharp protection for the trenches that would rip a mans skin.
What were the duckboards?
Planks of wood that attempted to keep the bottom dry.
What was the drainage ditch?
The channel of water dug to try and keep water gathering in the trench.
