the heart Flashcards
(10 cards)
there are four chambers of the heart what are they called
the upper chambers are called atriums, the lower chambers are called ventricles
how does blood circulate
body, vena cava, right atrium, right ventricle, pulmonary artery, lungs, pulmonary vein, left atrium, left ventricle, aorta, body repeat
why are valves needed
valves prevent back flow of blood, they make sure that blood only flows in one direction
why are humans said to have a double circulatory system
because the blood passes through the heart twice per circuit
why is the muscle on the left side of the heart thicker then the muscle on the right side
because the left side needs a stronger force to push the blood through the whole body (via the aorta)
why does heart disease cause issues around other parts of the body
coronary heart disease is when your hearts blood supply is blocked by a build up of fatty substances in the coronary artery, this can cause other problems such as kidney failure, this happens because due to the blockage your kidneys do not receive enough blood
why do people who do regular exercise have a slower heart rate
because exercise strengthens the heart muscle it allows the heart to pump a greater amount of blood each heart beat
why are artery walls thick
to withstand the high pressure of blood punched into them from the heart
veins have thinner walls than arteries because
the blood is at a much lower pressure
capillaries provide
a large surface area for the diffusion of substances
