The heart Flashcards
(15 cards)
which part of the heart brings in deoxygenated blood from the body?
vena cava
which part of the heart passes the deoxygenated blood to the lungs to be oxygenated?
pulmonary artery
which part of the heart is entry for newly oxygenated blood coming back from the lungs back into the heart?
the pulmonary vein
which part of the heart does the oxygenated blood get pumped to the body out of?
aorta
What does the heart mainly consist of?
Muscle tissue
By what are the atria and ventricles separated by?
valves
explain the blood circularitory heart system.
1- deoxygenated Blood enters the heart through the vena cava enters the two atria (Left = from the lungs) (Right = from the body)
2 - atria now contract, forcing blood out of the heart
3 - ventricles now contract and force blood out of the heart, either deoxygenated blood goes to the lungs out of the pulmonary artery, or oxygenated blood goes to the body to give oxygen to the cells for respiration/ energy through the aorta
4 - Oxygenated blood’s oxygen gets used by cells, organs etc and gets pumped back to heart through vena cava to be oxidated again, or old deoxygenated blood which is now oxygenated returns to heart through pulmonary vein
what is the purpose of the valves?
to stop the blood from flowing backwards into the atria when the ventricles contract
why does the left side of the heart have a thicker muscular wall?
The left side of the heart pumps blood around the WHOLE body, the right only pumps it to the lungs
where do the coronary arteries branch out of?
aorta
what is the purpose of the cornary arteries?
to provide oxygen to the muscle cells of the heart, the oxygen is then used in respiration to provide energy for contractions
what is the natural resting heartrate controlled by?
pacemaker
where is the pacemaker found?
right atrium
what can doctors do if your pacemaker stops working?
doctors can implant an artificial pacemaker in its place
what does an artificial pacemaker do?
corrects irregularities in heart rate
