The Human Brain Flashcards
(40 cards)
What are the three main parts of the brain?
Forebrain
Midbrain
Hindbrain
What structures does the forebrain contian?
Hypothalamus, Hippocampus and thalamus (Limbic system)
Cerebrum
What structures does the midbrain contain?
Nerve fibres
What does the midbrain do?
It has nerve fibres that link forebrain to hindbrain
Relay information for vision and hearing
What structures does the hindbrain have?
Medulla oblongata and cerebellum
What does are all the main structures of the brain?
Corpus callosum
Cerebrum
Cerebral cortex
Cerebellum
Spinal cord
Thalamus
Hypothalamus
Hippocampus
Pituitary gland
Brainstem
What three structures does the brainstem include?
Midbrain
Pons
Medulla
What is the name of the 3 membranes that surround the spinal cord?
Meninges
What are meninges made of?
Delicate pia matter
What are the function of the meninges?
They act as shock absorbers and anchor the brain to the skull
How much does the brain weigh?
1300-1400 grams
How many neurones is the brain made of?
100 billion neurones
What is meningitis?
Inflammation of meninges
How has meningitis rates been reduced?
Vaccination programmes
What type of meningitis is more fatal or common?
Viral meningitis is more common
Bacterial meningitis is fatal
What do the cells lining ventricles produce?
Cerebrospinal fluid
What does the cerebrospinal fluid do?
Supply neurones with oxygen and glucose
What does cerebrospinal fluid contain?
Antibodies and White blood cells to resist infection
NO RBC
What does the medulla oblongata do?
It controls the involuntary control of processes
What exemplar processes does the medulla oblongata control?
- Regulation of Heart beat
- Ventilation
- Maintaining blood presuure
- Balance
What is the medulla oblongata apart of?
The autonomic nervous system
AND
The hindbrain and the brain stem
What is the main purpose of hypothalamus?
Regulation of:
*Body temp
*Blood solute
*Thirst
*Hunger
*Sleep
How can the hypothalamus control other parts of the body?
It can receive information from other parts of the brain
In order to stimulate secretion of hormones from the pituitary gland to control parts of the body
(Hormone/Endocrine system)
How else can the Hypothalamus control the body besides hormones?
Through neurones and nerves (autonomic nervous system)
