The Human Eyeball Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the function of the optic nerve?
The optic nerve is made of millions of nerve fibers that send visual messages to your brain to help you see.
What is the function of the cornea?
The part of the eye that refracts or bends light as well as protecting it from the sun
What is the function of the pupil?
The pupil is an opening that allows light through the lens, which directs it onto the light-sensing cells of the retina at the back of the eye
What is the function of the lens?
The main optical function of the lens is to transmit light, focusing it on the retina.
What is the function of the retina?
Your retina senses light and sends signals to your brain through the optic nerve.
What is the function of the fovea?
The fovea is responsible for sharp central vision, and consists almost entirely of cone cells
What is the function of the iris?
The iris helps control the size of the pupil to let more or less light into the eye.
What is the function of the sclera?
The sclera is the supporting wall for your eyeball. It maintains your eye’s shape and protects it from injuries
What are cone cells?
Cone cells, or cones, are one of the two types of colour cells that are in the retina of the eye which are responsible for color vision as well as eye color sensitivity.
What are rod cells?
Rods are a type of photoreceptor cell in the retina. They are sensitive to light levels and help give us good vision in low light. They are concentrated in the outer areas of the retina and give us peripheral vision. Rods are 500 to 1,000 times more sensitive to light than cones.
What are the names of the two photoreceptor cells?
Cone cells and Rod cells
