The Inflammatory Response Flashcards
What is the first step in starting the inflammatory response?
Monocytes release cytokines and cytokines cause a sympathetic response, draw attention to the area, and increase temperature, metabolism, and catecholamines
What are some characteristics of the inflammatory response?
It can occur with or without infection, usually is localized, occurs outside the immune system, and cytokines control it
What cell releases histamine?
Basophils/mast cells
Where are basophils found in the body?
Near the surface and portals of entry
What does histamine cause?
Vasodilation, redness, increases hr, swelling, heat, pain, loss of function, fever, malaise, calls wbcs to area, and changes vessel permeability
What does the change in vessel permeability allow?
Allows plasma protein, white blood cells, and fluid to leak into the tissues
What do catecholamines cause?
They cause the liver to increase fibrinogen to make clots
What do eosinophils make?
Mucus
What do neutrophils do during the inflammatory response?
They stick to the endothelial wall (margination) and then platelets stick to the neutrophils and clog the vessels (pavementing)
