Q

why was the decision taken to force conversion of the jews in Aragon and Castile in 1492?

A

the main view that the strategy of isolation Jews into ‘aljamas’ to prevent converses from to prevent them from backsliding had failed
on the 31st of march a royal decree was published - all jews had until 31st of july to convert or to emigrate. one of the most likely influencers on the catholic monarchs was Torquemada.

the crown did not financially benefit from the expulsion of the jews - murphy argues that there was actually a decline in royal revenue
