What is the judiciary?
The collective term for judges and courts.
What are the 2 categories of judges?
Superior judges and inferior judges.
What are superior judges?
Highly experienced judges who handle more serious cases.
What are examples of superior judges?
Supreme court justices

What are inferior judges?
Judges in lower courts who deal with less serious cases.
What are examples of inferior judges?
Magistrates

What is the role of judges?
To interpret and apply the law impartially.
What is the qualification of a judge?
A legal qualification (except magistrates) and years of experience.
Who are judges selected by?
The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) under the Constitutional Reform Act 2005.
What are the duties of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC)?
Select candidates solely on merit
Select only people of good character
Encourage judicial diversity
