The Kidneys Flashcards
(12 cards)
The excess amino acids in the liver produces…
Urea
Name one waste product of respiration
Carbon dioxide
What do the renal veins carry?
Cleaned blood back to the body
What do renal arteries carry?
Blood from the body to the kidneys
What are the two main treatments of kidney failure?
Dialysis
Organ donation
What does each kidney contain?
Around one million tubules called nephrons
What is the glomerulus?
A small know of capillaries
What does the Bowman’s capsule do?
Filtration from the glomerulus of small molecules from blood into tubule, including water, glucose, salts and urea.
What happens in the convoluted tubules?
Selective reabsorption of glucose from tubule back into the body by active transport through the renal vein.
What happens in the collecting duct?
Reabsorption of water that the body needs from the tubule back into the blood (osmoregulation)
What does ADH do?
Controls the amount of water reabsorbed from the nephron, this regulates the water content of the blood (osmoregulation)
Where is ADH produced?
The pituitary gland
