the liver and metabolism Flashcards
(21 cards)
define metabolism
the sum of all chemical reactions happening in a cell or an organism, in which molecules are made or broken
list three things that metabolism helps with
respiration, photosynthesis, conversion of glucose to starch, glycogen and cellulose, helps forms amino acids, etc…
what do we convert glucose into and why
glycogen for storage because it’s insoluble.
why does glycogen need to be insoluble (in plants)
since glucose would be affected by osmosis
why do we make lipids
to store fat and oils
why do we store fat and oils
to use as long term energy storage and insulation
what are lipids made out of
three fatty acids and one glycerol
what are proteins made out of
amino acids
what are amino acids made out of? (plants
glucose and nitrate ions from the soil
what are amino acids used for
used to synthesise proteins
what is protein synthesis used for
growth and repair
what are urea made out of
the breakdown of excess protein s or amino acids
where is urea broken down and what for
in the liver ready for excretion
what do kidneys remove
urea
in respiration, what is glucose oxidised into
carbon dioxide and water
what is RELEASED in respiration
carbon dioxide and water
what is the word equation for respiration
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
what does aerobic respiration break the glucose down into
carbon dioxide and water
what and where does the blood from the muscles transport to
transports lactic acid to the liver
what is lactic acid converted back into in the liver
glucose
