1/5 of the population
- drew adherents from all ranks of society
- many ring recent immigrants possessing a greater link to Britain
- included: southern backcountry farmers, anglicans in New England and Germans and Dutch in NY
- NY most prominent area

What were the problems with the loyalists ?
A
- Variation of background meant unlike patriots there was no clear opposition
- often motivated on a local level so mobilisation was difficult and required British assistance
