The Lymphatic System Flashcards
(16 cards)
How are capillaries adapted to their function?
they are one cell think and have a small lumen
What is the function of leukocytes?
Help the body fight infection and disease
What is the function of erythrocytes?
Transplant oxygen around the rest of the body
What is the function of thrombocytes?
Help form clots for wounds to heal
What are two different systems of blood grouping?
ABO and rhesus
What are the 3 major parts of the lymphatic system?
The vessels
The nodes
The organs
What are the four main functions of the lymphatic system?
- Drains excess fluid- returning leaked fluid back into the circulatory system
- Aids the immune system- lymph collecting foreign particles and getting filtered out by lymph nodes
- Absorbing nutrients- collects products of fat digestion from small intestines
- Transport- transports water, cells, immune responses and waste materials
What is the role of the lymph in the lymphatic system?
The fluid inside the lymph vessels
What is the role of the lymph vessels in the lymphatic system?
Transports lymph around the body
What is the role of the lymph nodes in the lymphatic system?
Filter out pathogens and foreign bodies from lymph
What is the role of the lymph ducts in the lymphatic system?
Puts fluid back into circulatory system
What are the three lymphatic organs?
Spleen
Thymus
Lymph nodes
What is the role of the spleen?
-filters out aging blood cells
-stores blood platelets
-stores iron from old red blood cells
-removes cellular debris by performing phagocytosis
-provides environment for the initiation of immune responses by lymphocytes
What is the role of the thymus?
Crucial for the development of a functional adaptive immune system
What is the role of the lymph nodes?
Usually found where lymphatic vessels join
-filter out pathogens and foreign bodies to aid the immune system
-house/supply lymphocytes
What is lymph fluid?
A colourless fluid containing white blood cells, which bathes the tissues and drains through lymphatic systems into blood stream
