How are images used to create meaning?

A

Bond holding a gun = power, dominance, aggression, violence
Golden gun at the bottom = aggression, violence. The gold = wealth, superiority.
Oil rig imagery = historical context — global energy crisis that many western audiences were so worried about
Asian locations / enemies = historical context — Vietnam war. People from Asian backgrounds viewed as enemies of America and Britain
Martial arts uniform and moves = powerful + stronger than the other females

How is language used to create meaning?

A

Roger Moore’s name (actor who plays Bond) at the top of the poster signifies his importance. He was a well-known actor in the 70s = entice his fans into watching this film too
James Bond written underneath = connotes that Bond as a character is a key selling point of the film
Ian Fleming’s name near the title = engage the audiences of Bond books
“The man” = enigma — audience unsure who exactly the man is or why he has a golden gun
Bond making direct eye contact with the audience = calm, collected, serious character despite all the violence around him. Confidence in his abilities to outlast this violence
Lots of things going on in the image = audience expected to work through the images to understand the plot of the film
Central image is a mid-shot of Bond holding a gun = Propp’s theory: protagonist & hero.

A

Bond is positioned at the top in the middle and is the largest = dominance + importance to the film plot and his superior power over the other characters
Female & villain characters are small within the frame = weaker and less important to the narrative

How is genre/narrative used to create meaning?

A

Golden gun at the bottom = genre is action/crime. Gold could suggest that the villain could be quite wealthy. Enigma code as the audience wants to discover who is trying to kill Bond. Would be considered Propp’s villain
Action/spy genre = background imagery of cars flying through the air, explosions
“Gun” in title = connotes the genre of an action/spy film and signifies the violence that will take place
