(60 cards)
What is concentration?
The amount of solute dissolved in a given quantity of solution.
What are the main units used for concentration?
- g/L
- % (m/V)
- % (m/m)
- ppm
What does g/L mean?
Grams of solute per liter of solution.
What does % (m/V) mean?
Grams of solute per 100 mL of solution.
What does ppm mean?
Milligrams of solute per 1 liter of solution.
Convert: 3.5 g/L to ppm.
3.5 g/L × 1000 = 3500 ppm
Convert: 0.025% (m/V) to ppm.
0.025 × 10,000 = 250 ppm
If 6 g of salt is dissolved in 200 mL of solution, what is the concentration in % (m/V)?
(6 ÷ 200) × 100 = 3%
What does the pH scale measure?
The acidity or basicity of a substance.
What pH values are acidic?
Below 7
What pH values are basic?
Above 7
What is the pH of a neutral substance?
7
How much more acidic is a solution with pH 3 compared to pH 5?
100x (10 × 10)
What are common acidic substances?
- Lemon juice (pH 2)
- Vinegar (pH 2.2)
What are common basic substances?
- Soapy water (pH 10)
- Baking soda (pH 8.3)
What is an ion?
An atom or molecule that has gained or lost electrons and has a charge.
How do metal atoms become ions?
By losing electrons (positive ions).
How do non-metal atoms become ions?
By gaining electrons (negative ions).
What allows a solution to conduct electricity?
Mobile ions in solution (electrolytic dissolution).
What happens when HBr dissolves in water?
It dissociates into H⁺ and Br⁻ ions, making the solution conductive.
What are the 3 components of the fire triangle for combustion?
- Fuel
- Oxidizing agent
- Ignition temperature
What is combustion?
A chemical reaction with oxygen that releases heat and light.
Give the balanced equation for photosynthesis.
6 CO₂ + 6 H₂O + energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6 O₂
