Journey man
After seven years of Apprentice he became a Journey man.
Apprentice
The first stage in becoming a craftsman when you were seven and you weren’t paid.
Master craftsman
The final stage in becoming a craftsman.
Romanesque
The first churches were built in a style called Romanesque. They had round arches and decorations over the doors.
Gothic
A new style of church. It had arches over the window and doors were pointed.
Flying buttresses
Seen in a Gothic church. They are arches on the outside to support the weight of the roof.
Dormitory
Where the monks slept.
Refectory
Where the monks ate their meals.
Cloister
An open garden where the monks walked and prayed.
Scriptorium
Where manuscripts were copied by hand.
Infirmary
Where the sick were nursed.
Chapter house
Where the monks met to discuss the business of the monastery elect the abbot.
Novice
When a boy joined a monastery he became a novice.
Tonsure
A haircut a monk had to have. It was long on the sides and bald at the top of the head.
Matins
Morning prayers said at 3am.
Vespers
Evening prayers said at 5pm.
Compline
Night prayers said at 8pm.
Abbot
He was head of the monastery and elected by the monks.
Prior
When the abbot was away on business his place was taken by the prior.
Almoner
Looked after the poor when they visited.
Hosteller
Looked after travellers.
Friar
They travelled from place to place working with the poor.
