The Multi-Store Model - Atkinson and Shiffrin Flashcards

1
Q

What does the multi-store memory model consist of and how is information processed amongst these?

A

Sensory register, STM store and LTM store. Information passes in a linear way - from the environment to the SR to STM through attention, to the LTM through rehearsal.

Q

Outline what is meant by the primacy effect.

Q

What is the Korsakoff’s Syndrome and what implications does it have for the multi-store memory model?

A

Amnesia caused by chronic alcoholism whereby the STM is unaffected. This shows that the STM and LTM are different stores.

Q

The MSMM receives great support from a case study. Briefly outline it.

A

HM, after suffering severe epilepsy had a part of his Hippocampus removed which led to LTM loss. He could, however, still form short term memories, thus supporting the idea that the STM and LTM are separate stores.

Q

What are two of the major limitations of the MSMM?

A

Information is claimed to be transferred from the STM to LTM through rehearsal, however, nobody actually does this IRL.
The model is too simple. Brain damaged patients suggest that there are several STM and LTM stores.
