Q

What are the names of these ridiculous muscles?

A

Deltoid, Subscapularis, Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Major, Teres Minor. Just try to remember those. Two Teres, two -spinatus. And then two other assholes.

Q

How can I group those to remember them easier?

A

All of them except the deltoid are the rotator cuff muscles. Meaning they form a rotating cuff around the glenohumeral joint. Also you can remember them based on where they are positioned on the scapula. Supraspinatus and deltoid muscles are superior to the scapula; infraspinatus, teres major and teres minor are posterior; subscapularis is anterior.

Q

Where is the Deltoid muscle exactly?

A

Do you even lift, bro? It’s superficial to the rest of the muscles and right on top of the glenohumeral joint.

Q

Where are the stupid ass Teres muscles in relation to each other?

A

T. major is superficial and also slightly inferior to T. minor. Isn’t it a little weird that the minor muscles are often superior to the major ones? (Like the rhomboids?)

Q

Where is the supraspinatus?

A

Supra to the spine of the scapula. Have you studied the bony landmarks of the scapula? Get on that! It will make this scapular muscle stuff a lot easier.

Q

Where is the goddamn infraspinatus?

A

This one’s a doozy: Infra to the spine of the scapula. Which is also posterior on the scapula. And this little asshole is also superior to the Teres bros.

Q

What about the subscapularis? Where is that jerk?

A

Well there is a subscapular fossa on the anterior side of the scapula. You better believe that this fucker is hanging out right there.

Q

Ok, let’s get into everyone’s favorite bullshit: attachments! Where does the deltoid muscle attach?

A

The deltoid is an asshole. That said, it proximally attaches to the clavicle, acromion, and the scapular spine, and then it distally attaches to the deltoid tuberosity. That’s why it’s triangular shaped. 3 points of attachment to 1 point of attachment. Think about it…

Q

Where does the Teres Major hang out?

A

Ok, maybe you can remember that the T. Major is a major kink from the last set of flashcards. It’s on the medial lip of the intertubercular sulcus distally. Proximally it’s hanging out on the bottom of scapula. Also known as the inferior angle.

Q

Is Teres Minor in the same place as the Teres Major?

A

That would be great, wouldn’t it? Unfortunately T. Minor is a jerk. It goes from the lateral border of the scapula to the greater tubercle of the humerus.

Q

What about the rest of the muscles? Where do they attach?

A

Hey guess what! We can do all these together. They all distally attach to the greater tubercle of the humerus. Isn’t that cute? And then if you think about their names and the bony landmarks of the scapula, they all span one of the three fossas of the scapula.
So the supraspinatus attaches to the supraspinous fossa.
The infraspinatus attaches to the infraspinous fossa.
The subscapularis attaches to the subscapular fossa.

Q

So all the rotator cuff muscles attach to the greater tubercle of the humerus?

A

All except major kink. You know who that is… Teres Major, you dog you.

Q

Any common groups?

A

You better believe it, asshole. But they are random as hell. Deltoid and T. Minor are both innervated by the axillary nerve. The -spinatus muscles are both innervated by the suprascapular nerve. The subscapularis and T. Major are both innervated by the subscapular nerve, but subscapularis is innervated by the upper and lower branches and T. Major is innervated by just the lower one.

16
Q

Let’s do that in a more flashcard-y way. What does the axillary nerve innervate?

A

The stupid ass deltoid and teres minor. Who apparently are nervous system bros.

17
Q

What does the idiot suprascapular nerve innervate?

A

Both -spinatus muscles. Even infraspinatus.

18
Q

What does the dumb ass subscapular nerve innervate?

A

T. major (lower branch), and subscapularis (both upper and lower branches). T. major likes it low. Real low.

19
Q

Alright, what do these stupid ass muscles do? Let’s start with the deltoid, because he’s the most badass.

A

The deltoid does LITERALLY everything (except adduction of the humerus). Because the deltoid is a boss and he doesn’t have time to mess around with weak-ass adduction. But seriously, the deltoid laterally and medially rotates, flexes and extends, and abducts the humerus. Like. A. Boss.

20
Q

What does the supraspinatus do?

A

The supraspinatus initiates humeral abduction and stabilizes the GH (glenohumeral) joint.

21
Q

What does the infraspinatus do?

A

Lateral rotation of the humerus and stabilizes the GH joint.

22
Q

What does teres minor do?

A

Same things as infraspinatus (lateral rotation of humerus and stabilizer of the GH joint). Cause they are pretty much in the same place.

23
Q

What does Major Kink (T. Major) do?

A

My buddy T. Major adducts and medially rotates the humerus. Really… that’s it? The teres major adducts and medially rotates? That’s weak, T. man. I’m disappointed.

24
Q

What does the weirdo subscapularis do?

A

Uh, he medially rotates and adducts the arm (apparently cause T. major is so weak he can’t do it himself) and then he also stabilizes the GH joint.

25
Q

So all the rotator cuff muscles stabilize the GH joint?

A

Yeah. All except T. major, who is apparently way to busy adducting and medially rotating to think about anything else.
