The Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
(25 cards)
How many bones are there in the human body?
206 bones total
What are the 3 regions in the body?
- Head
- Truck
- Limbs
What is the definition of a bone?
A BONE is a hard solid organ that forms part of the skeleton.
What are bones constant being renewed with?
• Bones are continuously being renewed with new bone cells.
What is the HARDEST thing in the body?
• Bone tissue is the hardest thing in the body.
What are the 2 types of bone?
Spongy and Compact
What are bones catorigized by?
Long, Short, Flat, and Irregular
What is a long bone?
Long bones are long, thin middle and rounded ends. Mostly compact bone with bone marrow in the middle. Found in the limbs (mostly).
What is a short bone?
Short bones are cubic in shape (length and width are about the same). The are mostly spongy bone and are found in the wrists and ankles.
What is a flat bone?
Flat bones are flat, curved, and thin. They have outer layers of compact bone and the inside is spongy bone. Examples: Skull and sternum.
What is an irregular bone?
Irregular bones do not have a specific shape. Mostly found in the spine.
What is a Mandible?
Jaw/Jaw bone
What is a clavicle?
The clavicle is the bone that connects the breastplate (sternum) to the shoulder.
What is the Sternum?
The sternum is a partially T-shaped vertical bone that forms the anterior portion of the chest wall centrally.
What is the Vertebrae?
it is the spine
what is the Humorous?
From your shoulder to the elbow.
what is the Femur?
Your thighbone
What is a joint?
A joint is a junction between two or more bones.
What are the 5 functions of the bones?
Support, Protection, Blood Cells, Storage,
movement
What are the types of joint?
Freely Movable (hip, knee), Fixed (skull), Semimoveable(vertebrae)
What are the 5 mechanics of Joints?
- Extension (increase angle between two bones)
- Rotation (around an axis)
- Abduction (increase distance from the body)
- Adduction (decrease distance from the body)
- Flexion (decrease angle between two bones)
What are the 4 functions of muscles?
- Movement (contact and release, controlled by the nervous system)
- Posture (keeps the body shape even when not being used)
- Joint Stabilization (keeps the joint in place)
- Heat Release (Energy into thermal to keep body temp)
What is a smooth muscle?
line the organs, weak but tireless
What is a skeletal muscle?
bicep, strong but little endurance
