The Nature of Science Flashcards
(19 cards)
Bias
A systematic devastation between observations interpretations of data and an accurate description of a phenomenon
Constant
A quantity that is unknown but assumed to have a fixed value in a specified mathematical context.
control
one in which the subject or a group would not be tested for the dependent variables
Density
A measure of the quantity of some physical property (usually mass) per unit length, area, or volume
Dependent variable
he variable that is being measured or tested in an experiment.
experiment
a scientific test in which you perform a series of actions and carefully observe their effects in order to learn
Graph
the variation of a variable in comparison
Hypothesis
a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation
independent Variable
the variable the experimenter manipulates or changes
Mass
quantitative measure of inertia
Model
physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes
Scientific Law
a statement that describes an observable occurrence in nature that appears to always be true
Scientific Method
a method of research in which a problem is identified, relevant data are gathered
Standard
In metrology (the science of measurement), a standard (or etalon) is an object, system, or experiment that bears a defined relationship to a unit of measurement of a physical quantity
Technology
Technology (“science of craft”, from Greek τέχνη, techne, “art, skill, cunning of hand”
Scientific Theory
a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world,
Variable
A variable is any factor, trait, or condition that can exist in differing amounts or types.
Volume
Volume is the quantity of three-dimensional space occupied by a liquid, solid, or gas
SI
international decimal system of weights and measures derived from and extending the metric system of units
