The Nervous System Flashcards
Structures of the central nervous system
brain and spinal cord
Where is the spinal cord located?
Within the veterbratal column
What is the peripheral nervous system
Everything aside from the brain and spinal cord (Nerves etc)
Function of neurons
computation and communication between other neurons that allow for other cells to function
Describe a glia cell
A cell that provides support neurons to preform their function
Describe the structure of a neuron
A soma/cell body that leads to an axon and then dendrites
Describe the difference between gray and white matter
Gray matter contains many cell bodies and dendrites while white matter has many axons
Describe the cerebrum
The largest part of the brain separated into two hemispheres by the longitudinal fissure (SURFACE LEVEL)
Function of the corpus callosum
Providing communication between the two hemispheres of the brain
basal nuclei function
cognitive processing
basal forebrain function
nuclei that are important in learning and memory
limbic cortex funciton
part of the limbic system, a collection of structures involved in emotion, memory, and behavior
Describe the cerebral cortex
The folded (gyri and sulcus) region of the cerebrum that functions in higher function
Name the lobes of the brain
Parietal(Temporal), frontal, central, occipital
Describe the diencephalaon
A structure deep within the brain that walls off the third ventricle that makes up the thalamus and hypothalumus
Describe the thalamus
Nuclei that passes information between cerebral cortex, spinal cord, and brain stem.
Describe the function of the thalumus
Sensory information aside from the sense of smell can be processed here.
Describe the hypothalumus
Inferior and anterior to the thalumus that is also a collection of nuclei which function in in regulating homeostasis
Desrcibe the function of the hypothalumus
Regulating homeostasis and is in charge of the autonomic nervous system and endocrine system through the anterior pituitary gland.
It’s also involved with memory and emotion in the limbic system
Describe the brainstem
The midbrain and hindbrain(pons and medulla) that emerges from the vertsl surface of the forebrain that tapers down into the spinal cord.
Describe the function of the brain stem
The midbrain regulates sensory information of visual, auditory, and somatosensory spaces
The pons is mainly functioned in connecting the brainstem with the cerebellum as well as regulating cardiovascular and resperitory systems
Desrcribe the cerebellum
It’s essentially a smaller brain located on the inferior, posterior portion of the brain.
Describe the function of the cerebellum
Comparing information from the cerebrum with sensory feedback
Describe the structure of the spinal cord
A long, thick cord devided into various sections marked by external structures
