The nervous system Flashcards
(29 cards)
Enables in thinking, dreaming, feeling, and regulating bodily functions.
The nervous system
The nervous system consists in two parts:
-The central nervous system
-The peripheral nervous system
Consists on the brain and the spinal cord.
The central nervous system
Made up of the nerve cell that send messages between the central nervous system and other parts of the body.
The peripheral nervous system
Each of us has more than 100 billion neurons, which are found in?
The brain
Nerve cells that run through our entire bodies and communicate with each other.
Neurons
The ability to reorganize itself by altering the connections between neurons to make up for injury or disease.
Neuroplasticity
Neurons consists of three basic parts:
-Cell Body
-Dendrites
-Axon
Smaller fiber that branches out at the end of the axon
axon terminals
produced energy that fuels the neuron’s activity
cell body
thin fibers branching out from the cell body
dendrites
transmits messages away from it
axons
white fatty substance that insulates and protects the axon
myelin
a neuron has many dendrites but usually only one axon
True
junction between the axon terminals of one neuron and the dendrites of another.
synapse
what is the basic building block of the nervous system?
neurons
How are messages transmitted across synapse?
Neurotransmitter
a column of nerves about a thick as a thumb that extends from the brain down the back
spinal cord
The peripheral nervous system consist of:
-Autonomic System
-Somatic System
-Parasympathetic System
-Sympathetic System
involuntary muscles and internal organs
autonomic system
voluntary muscles and sense organs
somatic system
calms body after emergencies
parasympathetic system
prepares body for action
sympathetic system
involved primarly in motor behavior
dopamine
