The Nervous system Flashcards

1
Q

What is the central nervous system (CNS) ?

A

The CNS consists of the brain and the spinal cord, it controls behaviour and regulates the bodies physiological processes. It receives messages from sensory receptors and send messages to muscles and glands.

Q

What are the 4 areas if the brain?

A

Cerebrum- the largest part, split into 4 lobes and two halves called hemispheres
Cerebellum-Controls motor skills, balance and precise movement
Deincephalon-it is made up off the thalamus which regulates consciousness and sleep, and the hypothalamus which controls body temp, hunger, thirst, and stress response.

Q

What does the spinal cord do?

A

The spinal cord relays information between the brain and the body and allows the brain to monitor and control bodily processes. It does but having its spinal nerves which are connected to many different muscles and glands.

Q

The peripheral nervous system (PNS)

A

This is the nervous system through out the rest if body besides the spinal cord and the brain. It transmits messages to and from the CNS through neurons.
It is divided into two halves:
the somantic nervous system- controls voluntary movement and is controlled consciously, it controls skeletal muscles and is controlled by the motor cortex. It has sensory and motor pathways

the autonomic nervous system- this is a system not under conscious control and only has motor pathways, it controls smooth muscles, glands and internal organs. It is controlled by the brain stem and has two sub system

  • sympathetic nervous system- when a person is stressed heart rate and breathing increase while salivation reduces and digestion stops. Pupils dilate and blood is diverted away from the skin( fight or flight)
  • parasympathetic nervous system- when the body is relaxing heart rate and breathing reduces while digestion starts, salivation increase pupils constrict. Happens to conserve energy
