the new right Flashcards
what is the new right a combination of?
neo-liberalism (economic approach) and neo-conservatism (social approach)
principles of neo-liberalism:
-extend individual freedom by ‘rolling back the frontiers of the state’ (e.g. thatcher cutting free school milk - cutting back on the welfare state)
-drastic reduction in tax
-tighter control of gov. spending to reduce dependency culture
-deregulation and privatisation e.g. thatcher privatised BT
principles of neo-conservatism:
-reduce benefits e.g. thatcher reduced them for single mothers
-restore authority, national identity and a society influenced by judeo-christian morality
-tough on law and order e.g. at poll tax riots
-promotion of traditional family structures
